How You Can Help

How you can help your child to learn

You are probably doing it already!  Children do better when parents understand more about the learning and teaching that takes place in the early years setting their child attends.

By doing this parents are better able to support their child's learning at home.

Things to do with your child
The list is endless but here are a few ideas to get you started.
  • Ask them what they have done at Nursery.
  • Find out what they like/dislike.
  • Encourage them to ask questions and to listen.
  • Share books with your child even before they can read, talk to them about the pictures.
  • Count things and ask questions like, 'which is bigger'?
  • Celebrate what they have done by displaying pictures, models and things they make.
  • Let them paint, draw and create at home.
  • Let them help you to do housework/gardening and talk to them about it whilst they are doing it.

Lastly, always take an interest in what they are learning - talk to their teacher to find out how they are doing and if there is anything else they would like you to do.

What if I have difficulty with reading, writing or numbers?
Why not take this chance to brush up on your skills too.  There's lots of help available locally or you can learn online either at home or at your local Library.
