Making Choices

Making choices is for people who are interested in working with children, but who are not quite sure how they go about it.

It will help decide:
  • On the type of childcare setting you want to work in.
  • The role in childcare that is right for you.
  • What age of children and young people you would like to work with.

It will also give you information about the skills, knowledge, training and qualifications that you need to progress into working with children.

What areas of work are covered?
Some of the types of jobs covered are: Nursery nurse, childminder, playworker, hospital worker, nursery assistant, special needs support.

Who is it for?

  • Men or Women.
  • Young or old.
  • Young people who have just left or are leaving school.
  • Those on 'New Deal' programmes.  (lone parents, 50+, 18-24, etc.)
  • People returning to work after a career break.
  • Those seeking a career change.

The Programme
Making choices is a 12-hour programme spread over 2 to 6 sessions.  It is delivered by local trainers who have experience and knowledge of early years education, childcare and playwork and it will be available at a variety of venues across the Borough.

There is no charge for the programme
Every person who completes the programme receives a nationally recognised certificate of attendance and may be eligible to do more training with us either free of charge or at a reduction.
