Children in Walsall Home

Out-of-School & Breakfast Clubs

There are an increasing number of out-of-school clubs offering supervised play for school age children for 1-4 hours per day.  Clubs may be known as before and after school clubs if they operate morning and afternoon; others operate just as breakfast clubs.  Some clubs also operate during the school holidays.

In Walsall, most clubs operate on school sites; in other areas they may run at community venues and offer care to children from several schools.

Clubs should offer a range of activities including sports, games, arts/crafts, adventurous play, drama and other freely chosen activities.

Children should be actively involved in the running of the club and contribute their ideas to the planning and organisation of the club.

Most clubs that operate for over 2 hours per day (and offer facilities for under 8’s) are registered and subject to inspections by Ofsted to ensure they meet minimum standards.  Some are also working towards achieving additional quality awards.

Each club will have its own charging policy and if they are registered or accredited through one of the approved schemes, parents may be able to get some help with costs through the range of tax credits.
