Tax Credits

Tax Credits can help families with children or those who need help paying for childcare.  Nine out of ten families with children are eligible for tax credits.

Child Tax Credit supports families with children and some 16 and 18-year-olds.  You can claim whether or not you are in work.  All families with children with an income of up to £58,000 a year (or up to £66,000 a year if there is a child under 1-year-old) can claim the credit in the same way.

Working Tax Credit supports working people on low incomes by topping up earnings.  There is additional help for those who need to use childcare - this is call the childcare element.

The amount of working tax credit you get is based on your circumstances, for example how many hours you work and your income (or joint income if you are part of a couple).

The childcare element may provide additional support for those using registered or approved childcare.  Depending upon your circumstances you may be able to claim up to £94.50 per week (for one child) or £140.00 per week (for two or more children) towards the cost of your childcare.

The childcare element is added to the amount of working tax credit you can get.  Child tax credit and working tax credit do not affect child benefit payments which are paid separately.
